Désirée Kelly discovered oil painting while studying graphic design and drawing at Detroit’s own Wayne State University. She emerged as a breakthrough artist in 2013 as 5th cycle resident of Red Bull House of Art in Detroit. Kelly’s work now adorns Detroit Bus Company buses and walls around the city. Her best-known work, so far, is Abe in Shades, a depiction of the 16th president wearing sunglasses with kaleidoscope colors. There are now several “Abe’s” found across greater Detroit. Not exclusively a “street artist,” Kelly is a canvas painter, illustrator, and graphic designer, as well. She was commissioned by The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2016 to create a paint a 20ft mural for Spain Elementary Middle school in efforts to revitalize their gymnasium which was also featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show. She has shown work in Red Bull House of Art (Detroit), Inner State Gallery, Charles H Wright African American Museum, Ann Arbor Art Center, Scarab Club, Crooked Tree, and Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC).
