Chef Rohani Foulkes
Folk Detroit

Where Excellence Meets Ethics and Consumerism Meets Care
At the intersection of sustainability and culinary creativity stands Aboriginal Waiben–Australian founder Rohani Foulkes, whose journey from Cairns, Australia, to Detroit has shaped a career defined by ethical hospitality, environmental stewardship, and community impact. Since 2016, Foulkes has launched nationally recognized, mission-driven establishments—including the award-winning, James Beard–nominated Folk café—rooted in fair labor, biodynamic sourcing, and minimal-waste practices.
Through Folk and its sister ventures—including Neighbor X Folk, a modern sundry and events space inside Detroit’s historic Michigan Central Station, and the pioneering, award winning gourmet grocer and café, The Farmer’s Hand—Foulkes confronts institutional inequities while cultivating transformative partnerships across the city, state, and beyond. Her work proves that extraordinary food can nourish both the body and the social conscience.
